The Edmonton Oilers: A History of Playoff Success

The Early Years

The Edmonton Oilers were founded in 1979 as part of the World Hockey Association (WHA). The team joined the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1979 and quickly became one of the most successful teams in the league.

The Gretzky Era

The Oilers' greatest success came during the 1980s when they were led by superstar Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky led the Oilers to four Stanley Cup championships in five years from 1984 to 1988.

The Post-Gretzky Era

After Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988, the Oilers struggled to maintain their success. They did not make it back to the Stanley Cup Finals until 2006, when they lost to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Recent Years

The Oilers have made the playoffs in recent years, but they have not been able to advance past the second round. They lost in the second round in 2017, 2019, and 2021.

The Future

The Oilers are hoping to build on their recent playoff success and make a run at the Stanley Cup. They have a young and talented team led by Connor McDavid, who is one of the best players in the NHL.
